How to Use the é Standard Before You Buy

The é Standard is simple on purpose.

It was built for homes that are fully lived in — especially homes with children.

If you’re new to the framework, you can read why I built the é Standard.

And if you’d like to see how these three questions apply to a real purchase decision, here’s how I evaluate a round pedestal dining table for families.

The éStandard is meant to be used in real time. While you’re standing in a showroom, reading a product description, or while a tab is open and you’re deciding. It doesn’t require a spreadsheet, or guesswork.

The é Standard provides clarity.

You can download The éStandard Pre-Purchase Protocol to apply our 6 step process against a piece you’re considering and purchase with confidence.

Start with Durable.

Look past the finish.

What is it actually made of?

Is the material consistent throughout, or layered?

If it gets scratched, dented, or worn, what shows up?

Then ask the five-year question:

Will this look better in five years than it does the day I buy it?

Not untouched or pristine.

Better.

If the answer is no — we keep looking.

Next is Washable.

In a family home, maintenance has to be realistic.

Can you clean and maintain it yourself?

If it requires special ordering products, professional servicing for basic upkeep, or a level of caution that changes how your household functions, it’s a burden.

Last is Beautiful.

Do you love it?

Do you love it knowing it will be used?

If one fails, you don’t abandon the piece or its category. You refine the version.

If all three hold, you have your answer
